Mechanic Test

When looking to fill a mechanic position, it's important to make sure that the candidate has the skills necessary to do the job. A mechanic skills test can help ensure that the candidate is a good fit for the position.

  • What is a mechanic skills test?

A mechanic is responsible for vehicle repair and maintenance. Some mechanics specialize in a certain type of vehicle, while others work in more general garage roles. Mechanics need to have a range of skills and aptitudes as well as extensive knowledge of engines, electrical circuits, and general experience of diagnosing and repairing a vehicle.

The mechanic skills test is a pre-employment assessment that is designed to be used in the recruitment process for a role, allowing each candidate to demonstrate their level of skills and depth of knowledge when it comes to mechanics, the way a vehicle should work, and how to diagnose and fix problems.

For the recruitment team, the mechanic skills test is a useful way to ensure that the candidates that are chosen to move further into the recruitment process have the right aptitudes and competencies to be successful in the future.

  • What are the benefits of using the mechanic skills test for pre-screening?

A mechanic will perform many different duties on a daily basis. They will be able to diagnose problems and faults, using digital or manual tools - and then know what needs to happen to fix the problem.

They need to be able to prepare estimates for work completed, including accurate forecasting for the time and labor costs as well as for the parts. A mechanic will also need to be able to maintain vehicles and perform service checks, looking for typical problems and getting them fixed before they affect the safety or performance of the vehicle.

While a mechanic might have certain qualifications - maybe a college-level diploma or an apprenticeship, it is not always easy to see which candidates have also got the right soft skills, aptitudes and competencies to be a success in the mechanic role that you are trying to fill.

Recruiters will be looking for a candidate who not only has a deep understanding of vehicle mechanical principles, but also knowledge of engineering technology, including different tools and machinery. They also need to have excellent problem-solving abilities and logical thinking, with an eye for detail and perseverance.

As mechanics tend to work with customers, they also need to have excellent communication skills, so that they can explain a complicated mechanical problem in a simple enough way to be understood, and discuss things like invoices and pricing.

Mechanics who work in smaller garages might be responsible for maintaining stock databases, ordering new parts from suppliers, and dealing with customer inquiries.

The mechanic test together with the auto retail test provides the recruitment team with objective, actionable data about the skill level of each applicant, so that the right candidates can be chosen to move forward because they have already demonstrated their understanding of the principles and the ability to apply their knowledge in a practical way.

How our test measures mechanic skills

Test questions are designed to assess industry-specific technical skills, soft skills, aptitude and suitable personality dimensions. Our data-driven approach provides results that enable you to determine how suited is a candidate for the role.

Depending on the type of question, the format of the test may vary. Multiple-choice questions are used to measure aptitude, technical skills and soft skills, while agreement on a Likert scale assesses suitable personality dimensions. Skills tests ensure that candidates are being evaluated in a precise and impartial manner, their results demonstrating the true knowledge and potential of each test taker.

The characteristics required to be a mechanic were determined by looking at the skills and abilities listed in the US Department of Labor’s O*NET database, which collects data from professionals in various fields.

O*NET is the largest database of its kind, providing detailed information about occupations and the requirements for each role.

Our team of I/O psychologists and psychometrics worked closely with subject-matter experts to create an extensive question bank that can be used to test multiple candidates. We also conducted rigorous field testing with a representative sample of candidates to ensure that the questions were reliable and valid.

Test scores are averaged together to give an overall score. The average score is compared to other candidates' scores to ensure there is no bias toward certain candidates.

Our mechanic test is constantly updated and optimized to ensure the best experience and results.

Mechanic Test FAQs

What are the most important skills of a mechanic?

A mechanic needs to have good manual dexterity skills and physical strength, as well as a skilled understanding of the principles that govern vehicle mechanisms. They need to be able to solve problems and have great attention to detail, while being able to provide excellent customer service.

Do mechanics need to know physics?

Mechanics need to have a deep understanding of vehicle mechanical principles, and since most of these are related to physics principles it follows that a mechanic should know physics. However, they do not necessarily need to have advanced level or degree level knowledge of physics as a whole; just what applies to vehicle repair and maintenance.
